  1.                            EXPOSITION.

  3.         Suddenly the terrible artillery of heaven was discharged;
  4. the _brightness_ of lightning lit up the clouds as with a glory
  5. proceeding from him who was concealed within the cloudy pavilion;
  6. and volleys of hailstones and coals of fire were hurled forth
  7. upon the enemy. The lightnings seemed to cleave the clouds and
  8. kindle them into a blaze, and then hailstones and flakes of fire
  9. with flashes of terrific grandeur terrified the sons of men.

  11.               EXPLANATORY NOTES AND QUAINT SAYINGS.

  13.         Verse 12.--"_Coals of fire_." The word signifies, living,
  14. _burning coals_. Where the lightning fell, it devoured all before
  15. it, and burned whatever it touched into burning embers.--^Samuel
